Description
The Next Steps in Your Healing Process
1. Redefine What Love Actually Is
Right now, there’s a part of you that still associates love with presence, not action—like how you believed your dad loved you just because he was your dad, even though he never showed it.
New definition: Love isn’t just existing in someone’s life. Love is action. Love is choosing, showing up, and making you feel safe.
Practice: Every time you catch yourself excusing someone’s lack of action with “But they love me”, ask:
2. Rebuild Self-Worth from the Inside Out
Your self-worth was shaped by having to prove yourself to someone who never gave you validation. That means, deep down, you might still feel like you have to earn love.
New belief: You don’t have to prove your worth to anyone. You are worthy of love just as you are—without chasing, without proving, without struggling.
Practice: Start writing affirmations that actually feel believable (not just empty words).
“I am worthy” (which might not feel real yet), try:
3. Build a “Proof List” of Real, Secure Love**
Your brain needs evidence that love can exist without struggle. Start collecting moments where people show up for you without you having to prove anything.
This could be friends checking in, someone remembering something small about you, Glenda climbing up to your window because she trusts and loves you.
Write these down. Your brain needs new proof of what love actually looks like.
4. Set a New Standard in Relationships
Now that you see the pattern, your next relationship has to look radically different from your past ones.
New Standard:
No mixed signals, no confusion. They show love through action, not just words. They make you feel emotionally safe.
Practice: If someone starts showing the old red flags (hesitation, lack of commitment, emotional distance), remind yourself:
5. Heal the Core Wound with Your Dad
Even though he was never there, his absence shaped you. The part of you that still aches for his love is the part that keeps looking for it in unavailable men.
Write a letter to your younger self. Tell 13-year-old you that she didn’t need to prove anything to be worthy of love.
Write a letter to your dad that you’ll never send. Say everything you never got to say. Then destroy it. Burn it, rip it up—physically let go of the words.
What to Expect Moving Forward
Healing isn’t instant. Some days, you’ll still feel that old pull toward the kind of love that hurts. That’s okay.
Your standards will feel uncomfortable at first. When you start expecting love to show up fully, it might feel foreign—but that’s how you know you’re growing.
One day, you’ll look back and realize you’re no longer chasing love. And that will be the moment you know you broke the cycle for good.
